Welcome to unique green stuff!
The items on our website are products that do three very important things:
They're good for the environment.
They save you money.
They're fun to use.
Before we offer anything for sale, we buy it as a retail customer, use it daily, abuse it often, try to break it (sometimes successfully), track the money we save, and make notes. LOTS of notes, so we can offer info and tips you won't find anywhere else.

This Week's Sun Oven experiment:
What would happen if you put a frozen pot pie into your Sun Oven in the morning, go to work and don't come back until dinnertime? We tried it:

You end up with a completely cooked pot pie that (despite being on its own all day) and only warmed by the Sun Oven, is STILL (at 6:30 PM) a little too hot to eat. When you pierce the top crust, steam comes out. When you dig out a forkfull, you'd BETTER blow on it to cool it off. And since you used the sun to cook it, there's no energy bill at all! Click here for more about our experiences with the Sun Oven.

Update: The Pressure Wash Shoot-out:
Which one should we sell? The war between the Wonder Clean and the Wonder Wash clothes washers continues!
Our Wonder Clean has done 57 washes so far, saved about 1,644 gallons of water, and appromately $83 in energy bills. Not a single problem so far.
We broke our Wonder Wash! It features a handy Siphon Tube, but the 37th time we used it, the drain valve stuck open and we haven't been able to run it since. We sent an email on October 3rd. We'll see!

Good News/Bad News: Redi-Quik Probe
Those of you who have bought our Sun Oven already know how important it is to have a temperature probe. We tested four different probes, we decided the Redi-Quik was the handiest, best operating, most precise remote temperature probe out there. We found the distributor, and asked about ordering them.
Unfortunately, we'd have to order about a boatload of these just to qualify for a price that (believe it or no) is what Bed, Bath and Beyond can sell them for retail!
So...if you want the best remote temp probe at the best price you can find, it's at Bed, Bath & beyond for $39.99. Here's their link to get one. |
Our Spin: In search of Mini Me.
We've been using a Spin Dryer & clothesline to do laundry, instead of our 220 volt electric dryer.
The Spin Dryer was $140. You can get about half a normal dryer's worth (12 pounds) of clothes "spun" at one time. The clothes can go in soaking wet, and they're barely damp when they come out. Our monthly bill dropped $38 when we started using the Spin Dryer. It will pay for itself within 4 months. But...what else is there?
Meet Mini Me. It's $70, spins about two pounds of clothes (2 pair of jeans), It's about a third the size, doesn't spin as fast, but claims to get the job done. We'll see. We ordered ours on October 5th and plan to seriously pound on it, just like we're doing with our Spin Dryer test.

This Week's Soaps: Really tiny bubbles.
We're dumping the water from our pressure washers right into the garden, using a biodegradable soap.
Then we found Oasis Soap, which is "biocompatible". That's one step better: when it's poured into the ground, it's actually plant or vegetable food! Our flowers and tomatoes love this stuff.
There's no pressure washer or (gasp!) spin dryer for dishwashers, but there is Wave biodegradable soap. We're thinking about re-routing the water from our dishwasher (greywater) to water plants. Before we go tearing holes in the wall, we've ordered some Wave soap first, so we can see if the most eco-friendly dishwasher soap cleans our dishes as thoroughly as the brand we're using now. |
